A bus service that provided Glossop residents with a link to both Sheffield and Manchester is to be withdrawn in the New Year. 

The X57 route, operated by Hulleys of Baslow, was from Manchester through Glossop over the Snake Pass and on to Sheffield. 

But despite the service receiving a positive reception when it was launched, the lack of passengers has prompted the decision. 

Alf Crofts, the bus company’s Managing Director, confirmed the service is to end.

He said: “The last day of operation will be Saturday 8 January 2022.  

“For a small operator such as ourselves launching such a high-profile service connecting two cities over a tortuous road was always going to be challenging, but we gave it our very best day after day in spite of the weather, road closures, temporary traffic lights and so on. 

He said: “Despite the promising noises made about the service and the support we have received for providing it, sadly that promise, and support didn't sufficiently transfer into fare paying passenger numbers to make the service viable.”   

High Peak MP Robert Largan said he is disappointed the service is being withdrawn. 

He commented: “This service was a useful addition to our public transport network, providing an easy and efficient link to Manchester, Manchester Airport and Sheffield, whilst also promoting tourism to Ladybower Reservoir." 

He has pledged to continue pushing for better local public transport including efforts to get the 236 bus service, that provided Glossopdale residents with a link to Ashton Sixth Form College and Tameside Hospital, reinstated.
