YELLOW WEATHER WARNING: 60mph gusts to last most of weekend

A yellow weather warning for wind is in place for Tameside and the High Peak from Friday afternoon until Sunday morning.

The alert covers much of the UK, with only the far north of Scotland predicted to escape a battering from Storm Darragh.

The Met Office says yellow wind alerts bring a small chance of damage to homes – particularly roof tiles – while fallen trees could potentially disrupt traffic.

Flying debris and beach materials flung out by large waves may pose a risk to life, while power cuts and public transport could cause further disruption.

Greater Manchester and Derbyshire are likely to face 60mph gusts, although a rare red warning for most of the Welsh coast and parts of Devon and Somerset could bring deadly 90mph winds on Saturday.

"We advise staying indoors, if possible, but if you go out, try not to walk or shelter near buildings and trees," said a statement from the North West Ambulance Service. "Check for loose items outside your home and secure them. Items include bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, sheds, and fences.

"If you’re travelling on the roads, please take extra care and slow down to minimise the impact of wind gusts. Check local travel updates and plan additional time for your journey.

"As always, we’re here for you when you need us most; use 111.nhs.uk for urgent medical help and advice, and call 999 in a life-threatening emergency."
