Up to 400 new homes could be built on a huge industrial estate in Oldham under plans due to go out to public consultation this week.
A developer has unveiled plans to demolish Shaw Distribution Centre and transform the site off Linney Lane into a residential estate.
The proposals, by Estuary Park Property Holdings Limited, would see the 12 hectare site feature new ‘recreational open space’ for residents and the surrounding local community.
The dramatic redevelopment plans follow a series of economic blows for the borough after The Very Group relocated from the Shaw site at the cost of hundreds of jobs.
And Yodel have announced they will also relocate their operations from the distribution centre.
The housing plans for the site would see the industrial units and warehouses replaced with ‘quality and affordable homes’, according to the developer.
A spokesperson for Estuary Park Property Holdings Limited said: “Our proposals will provide much needed new homes in Shaw without the need to develop green belt land.
“The remediation and regeneration of this brownfield site will positively impact the environment particularly the River Beal, creating a new naturalised corridor and increased biodiversity.
“To ensure our development proposals are in keeping with the local community’s needs, we are looking forward to engaging with residents and stakeholders and using this feedback to shape our proposals.”
Ahead of a formal application for outline planning consent being submitted to Oldham council, a public consultation is being launched.
Due to current restrictions around coronavirus and social distancing guidelines, the consultation will be held online at the dedicated website Linneylaneconsultation.co.uk.
