Ambulance bosses urge safety first on 'Mad Friday'

As the festive season kicks into high gear, North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) urges the public to prioritise safety during their celebrations, especially on the notorious "Mad Friday."

Traditionally one of the busiest nights for emergency services, Mad Friday, falling tomorrow, is known for increased boozing and partying, leading to a surge in incidents and accidents.

Operating Officer Salman Desai said: "While we understand the desire to make the most of the festive period, it's crucial that everyone takes steps to ensure their own safety and the safety of others. We want people to enjoy themselves, but it's equally important to be mindful of the potential risks and act responsibly."

NWAS offers the following tips for a secure and enjoyable celebration:

Plan ahead: Arrange transportation in advance, whether it's a designated driver, public transport, or a taxi service.

  1. Stay hydrated: Alternate alcoholic drinks with water to stay hydrated and reduce the risk of overindulgence.
  2. Look out for friends: Keep an eye on your friends and make sure everyone has a plan for getting home safely.
  3. Know your limits: Be aware of your alcohol consumption and know when it's time to stop. Overindulgence can lead to accidents and health issues.
  4. Use licensed transportation: When using ride-sharing services, make sure they are licensed and legitimate.

NWAS is gearing up for the increased demand on Mad Friday and throughout the festive season.

Mr Desai added:  "Our dedicated paramedics and staff are here to respond to emergencies, but we urge the public to be mindful of their actions to reduce the strain on our services. By taking simple precautions, everyone can contribute to a safer and happier Christmas period.

"You should still call 999 or go to A&E in an emergency when someone is seriously ill or injured and their life is at risk. But if you need urgent medical help and you're not sure where to go, use NHS 111 online to get assessed and directed to the right place for you.”
