Police have arrested a man who sped the wrong way around a roundabout in a stolen car on Sunday night.
GMP received reports of a stolen vehicle in Delph just before 10:30pm and although officers soon spotted it, the driver refused to stop, reaching speeds of over 100mph in efforts to escape.
Specialist police pursuit drivers tracked down the stolen car, which crashed into barriers after going anticlockwise around a roundabout on the approach to the A627(M).
The 19-year-old suspect took off on foot but was captured following a short chase, with officers seizing a machete they believe the driver discarded as well as a quantity of drugs from the car.
Inspector Jamie Buchanan, from GMP’s Roads Policing Unit, said: “This latest arrest is a prime example of the work we are doing on a daily basis to trace stolen cars and remove drugs and weapons from our streets.
“The driver showed a blatant disregard for members of the public, reaching speeds of over 100mph, and even driving the wrong way on a busy roundabout.
“Thankfully, no members of the public were injured, but without the quick-thinking actions of the officers involved, this could’ve ended very differently.”
The suspect remains in police custody for questioning.
