Children educated on knife crime

PCSO Andy Bigland delivers a talk to children.

Police have been educating young children about the dangers and consequences of knife crime.

PCSO Andy Bigland visited Northmoor Academy on Alderson Street, Oldham, to deliver the knife crime awareness presentation to Year 5 and Year 6 pupils.

He said: “This was an excellent session and all the staff in the assembly have said how useful and important it was for our children to hear the content.

“The feedback from the school was that they were really impressed with the informative pitch, which did not leave the children scared either.

“The children greatly enjoyed the visit. The presentation was engaging and well-paced and the children went away with a much greater understanding about the associated risks and consequences of carrying a weapon, delivered in a sensitive yet thought provoking manner.”

He added: “The discussion had plenty of opportunities for the Upper Key Stage 2 children to both answer and ask questions around the topic in a supportive and safe environment.

“It really feels as though communication around the issue has been opened with the children now having a range of strategies to keep themselves safe.”
