Council leader visits Oldham Hulme Grammar School

Council leader Amanda Chadderton and Oldham Hulme Grammar School Principal Tony Oulton

Oldham Hulme Grammar School welcomed Oldham Council leader Councillor Amanda Chadderton to the school this week.

Her visit comes just after the school were joined by the new Principal Tony Oulton, who arrived just prior to Christmas and has already set out a bold vision for the school for 2023 and beyond.

Councillor Chadderton toured the school and its facilities with Mr Oulton, discussing her passion for the young people of Oldham and their education.

On her visit, Mr Oulton commented: “We were delighted to welcome Councillor Chadderton to school. She is a passionate advocate for young people in the borough and I look forward to working with her and the education team at the council as well as other local heads in the future. It was great to hear that she recognises the transformative education Hulme offers.

“One third of our students receive some form of financial assistance with fees, through our bursary fund, and like many parents of children in independent schools, they make very real daily sacrifices to send their children to the schools they feel suit their child best. Hulme is a vehicle for social mobility and many of our former students speak powerfully of how a Hulme education has set them up to be successful in future life.

“Hulme is no bastion of privilege. We are a diverse and dynamic community; students here are well-rounded and grounded, determined to make the world a better place.

“At a time when education is being used as a political pawn, it was a joy to sit down with someone like Amanda who is all about supporting schools to deliver the best start in life for young people and who believes that freedom of choice for parents is to be treasured. As she said to me, raising attainment in schools in the borough and nationally will be best achieved by long-term sustained investment from Westminster. I couldn't agree more.

“Instead of discussing moves to make the UK the only country in the world to place a tax on education, the current and any future government must commit to greater sustained funding for state schools as well as recognising the brilliant work that independent schools do and the lasting place they have in the wider educational landscape."
