Don't Trash Oldham Day of Action planned

Oldham Council has given its backing to the Great British Spring Clean, Keep Britain Tidy's national clean-up event which returns from 17 March to 2 April.

Councillors and staff are supporting the charity by holding a borough-wide day of action on Friday 17 March.

Ward members and teams from across various local authority departments will be rolling up their sleeves and carrying out litter picks and clean-ups at sites that have been identified as needing a bit of extra attention.

Since the Don’t Trash Oldham campaign started in September 2021, lots of residents, organisations, schools and groups have got behind efforts to keep communities tidy.

The council is encouraging those who want to 'do their bit' and improve their neighbourhoods to take part in the Don’t Trash Oldham Day of Action.

Councillor Hannah Roberts, Oldham Council’s Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said: “Every area in the country suffers from litter and fly-tipping.  “Thankfully, the vast majority of Oldhamers take pride in their communities and keep them clean and tidy – but, unfortunately, there is always a small minority who don’t.

“Over the last 18 months our Don’t Trash Oldham campaign has made a real difference to our communities. We know because residents have told us.

“We can all do more though. It would be great if people got involved in our day of action and helped tidy up their neighbourhoods.

“Cleaning up our communities costs residents and the council hundreds of thousands of pounds each year, so initiatives like this not only help improve the area but also save money.”

Anyone planning to take part in the day of action is asked to share any photos or videos using the hashtags #DontTrashOldham #LitterHeroes on social media.

But if people can't take part on that day, the council supports community litter picks and loans out equipment. Email EnvironmentalServices@oldham.gov.uk to book a time to pick up equipment.

Anyone who wants bagged litter to be removed as part of the day of action or after an organised group litter pick is asked to get in touch with the council to agree dates, times and locations in advance, giving as much notice as possible.
