Eight attempted murder arrests after drive-by shooting

Police have arrested eight people on suspicion of attempted murder after a drive-by shooting at Thursday lunchtime.

An 18-year-old man is still in hospital and 'lucky to be alive’ following what officers believe was a targeted attack on Shaw Road in Oldham.

The victim was a member of a group leaving a taxi when they were fired at by somebody on an e-bike.

Since arresting a 19-year-old man the same afternoon, GMP’s Major Incident Team have also questioned two men in their 20s, an 18-year-old and three under-18s.

The 19-year-old and a man in his 40s have since been released on bail.

Detective Chief Inspector Charlotte Whalley said: “We have been working tirelessly around the clock to identify those responsible, and I would like to reassure the community that this is believed to be a targeted attack with no wider risk to the public.

“We are determined to deliver justice for the victim who sustained very serious injuries and is lucky to be alive.

“Firearms have no place on the streets of Oldham and Greater Manchester as a whole, and we take incidents like this incredibly seriously.”

Anybody with information should call the police’s non-emergency 101 hotline quoting ‘Log 1281 of 16/01/2025’, or report anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
