Two young men were stamped on and had homophobic comments hurled at them by a gang in a "frightening ordeal" at Oldham Central tram stop.
Greater Manchester Police said two men in their 20s were approaching the tram stop on Union Street when a group of men shouted homophobic comments at them and attacked them, stomping on the chest of one and the head of the other.
The two men required hospital treatment for head and facial injuries.
The group is described as being made up of Asian men in their 20s, who were wearing dark-coloured clothing at the time.
Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed what they are treating as a hate crime to come forward.
DC Morret, of GMP’s Oldham district, said: “This was a frightening ordeal for the two men and it should never have happened.
“Oldham Central is a busy tram stop so we believe there may be witnesses who can assist us with our investigation.
“I would ask anyone with information or dash cam footage from the area that night to share it via phone or officers on foot patrol”
