Goofus Theatre Returns with Unique Performances for Dementia Awareness Week

Puppetry engagement helps to connect with people of all generations.

Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust (NCA) has partnered with Goofus Theatre, a charity-based organisation, to bring a series of powerful performances to those who may not otherwise experience them.

The theatre company will visit hospital sites across the NCA during Dementia Awareness Week to deliver their signature sensory performances directly to patients.

Blending puppetry, mask, music, and play, the shows are part of Goofus’s acclaimed REACH programme that is designed to connect with people across all generations and abilities through non-verbal, immersive theatre.

Jon Jones, NCA Deputy Head of Patient and Service User Experience said: “We are extremely fortunate to have previously partnered with Goofus Theatre to bring a series of magical theatre experiences to those living with dementia on our inpatient wards.

“We recently hosted performances at our children's ward in Oldham where the response from patients, families and carers has been incredible.

“The Goofus team brought joy, laughter and smiles to everyone they met. We’re delighted to welcome them back to continue our relationship and build on our ongoing dedicated support to our patients and service users.”

The REACH programme is central to Goofus Theatre’s mission, giving intimate, interactive performances to those that need it the most.

There is no script, just music, imagery, and moments of pure, human interaction.

Paul Barnhill, Artistic Director at Goofus Theatre added: “This is our second year working with the NCA, and we’re thrilled to return.

“REACH isn’t about audience numbers, it’s about meaningful, personal exchanges.

“We have experience of creating shows for those living with dementia and it is heartwarming to see the impact it has.

“We believe performance should have no borders with our work designed for all backgrounds, ages, and abilities.”

The specially curated performances will take place between May 19 and May 21 in ward corridors and at bedsides, offering patients with dementia a calming and engaging experience that supports emotional wellbeing and recovery.
