This a perfect chance to try out dinghy sailing at the idyllic setting of Dovestone Reservoir as the Dovestone Sailing Club is hosting their annual Open Day.
The event is run as part of the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Discover Sailing initiative.
If you’re interested in sailing and exploring the picturesque setting of the Dovestone Reservoir, simply turn up in clothes to suit the day. Buoyancy aids are provided by the organisation. You will be on the water with experienced sailors, in safe hands. Those keen to take it further can then sign up for one of the club's training courses, hosted this year on May 18, June 15 and August 10.
Visitors enjoy around 30 minutes tacking backwards and forwards across the reservoir, learning the basics of dinghy sailing.
One family at a previous event included three generations (in picture above)
Mary Dunkerley had been a club member during the club's first year, back in 1967, when the reservoir was filled for the first time. She hadn't been sailing for over 50 years and loved sharing the experience with her son, Chris Dunkerley, and her grandson, Hugo Dunkerley.
“If you've walked around the lake, seen the boats on the water and thought ‘I'd like to do that,’ this is your chance,” said a spokesperson of the sailing club.
Dovestone Sailing Club is hosting its annual Open Day on 27th April from 10am to 4:30pm.
