Man arrested after neighbours report hearing gunfire

Officers in Oldham have arrested a 28-year-old man following a shooting which damaged a chip shop window.

Police were called at around 5.30pm on Thursday to Minton Street, Oldham, after reports from residents.

Part of the road was closed off for several hours as officers carried out their enquiries and identified a suspect, who was later arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

The window of a local chip shop was damaged, believed to have been caused by a firearm.

Det Chief Insp Lindsay Booth said: "This was a frightening incident and not something we will not tolerate on the streets of Greater Manchester.

"This could have resulted in serious injury or death but fortunately no one was injured.

"Our officers were on the scene quickly and will remain in the area for a few days, followed up by regular patrols.

"I would like to thank the residents of Minton Street and the surrounding area for their patience last night as they assisted our officers with their enquiries.

"We will always act on reports and intelligence from the public to keep our communities safe."

Anyone with information, dashcam footage or who was in the area at the time should contact police on 101 quoting log 2758-25/4/24.

Alternatively, you can report information anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Always call 999 in an emergency.
