Naylor blasts 'embarrassing' display

Describing Oldham's 31-0 loss at Doncaster as "embarrassing", Roughyeds head coach Scott Naylor revealed that his side completed no more than two or three sets in the entire game.

Naylor's men went into the game with the best 'points for' record in the division and one of the best 'points against' figures.

Determined, dashing Donny tore those statistics to shreds and produced, with such a wide margin of victory, one of the upsets of the season so far.

Like fans and everyone else associated with the Oldham club, team boss Naylor was hugely displeased.

He said: "The scoreline is embarrassing. Doncaster are a good team and are difficult to beat at home, but I didn't start this season with the squad we have expecting to lose by a margin like this no matter who we were playing.

"We made handling errors and coughed up possession whenever we got in their half and we completed no more than two or three sets in the entire game.

"When that happens you've got to defend well, but we neither controlled possession nor defended well and that's extremely disappointing.

"The lads themselves are really disappointed at the outcome of the game.

"This season never ceases to amaze me. Not just at Oldham but throughout the division you never know what's going to happen from one week to the next.

"Although we didn't play well last week (beaten 24-12 by Doncaster at home in the 1895 Cup), I thought we had turned a corner in the league.

"We had a few players back today and I thought we would be okay. Whatever the result, I thought there would be one score in it at the most.

"We trained well last week and we were confident going into the game. It was an opportunity to put right the wrongs of the cup defeat by the same opponents, but we did more wrongs than rights so it didn't happen.

"We've now got a lot of hard work and soul-searching to do.

"A lot of people need to look in the mirror and decide what they want to get out of this season."

Roughyeds start the second half of the league campaign with a home game against Keighley Cougars at the Vestacare Stadium next Sunday, June 16, 3pm kick-off.
