New Lidl store will bring new jobs

Albert Street, Chadderton, where the new Lidl is being built.

A new Lidl store is set to open its doors in Oldham later this year.

Construction started on the new branch on Albert Street in Hollinwood this week, with work set to be finished ‘before the end of 2025’.

Once completed, the supermarket will provide up to 40 new full-time jobs in the area.

Nick Harvey, regional head of Property at Lidl GB, said: “It’s fantastic to see construction underway on our newest store in Oldham.

“We’re proud that this investment will not only enhance convenience for our customers but also create jobs and contribute to the local economy. With our plans on track for an opening before the end of the year, we look forward to keeping the community updated.”

The supermarket will feature one of Lidl’s much-loved in-store bakeries and a ‘Middle of Lidl’ discount area with offers on toys, clothes, gardening tools and kitchen implements. Toilets with baby-changing facilities will also be available for customers, along with dedicated parent and child parking spots.

Accessible by car via Olice Claydon Way, the grocery shop will have space for up to 111 cars, including six disabled bays and two electric charging ports, as well as bicycle stands. Part of the shop will also be powered by solar-panels, according to Lidl planners.

Once works are complete, the shop will open between 7am and 11pm Monday to Saturday (inclusive of Bank Holidays) and 10am and 6pm on Sundays.

Oldham Council approved the new shop at a planning meeting in October last year, after Lidl decided to expand its application to almost four times the original size – from 500 to almost 2,000 square metres in total.

At the time, councillor Brian Holbin, whose ward borders on the development, welcomed the shop and ‘new jobs’.

The shop will be competing with Morrisons on nearby Tweedale Way, the Hollins Rd Asda and independent grocery store BBM Supermarket on Oldham Rd, all less than a five minute drive from the new site.
