Oldham embraces spirit of unity and charity as Ramadan 2024 commences

As the crescent moon appears on the horizon, the Oldham community welcome the holiest month in the Islamic calendar. Muslims across the town commence fasting, prayer, and acts of charity as they embark on a journey of spiritual reflection and self-discipline.

During this holy month, fasting individuals abstain from food and drink and other physical needs, focusing instead on prayer, Quranic recitation, and acts of kindness. Worshippers also engage in nightly prayers known as Taraweeh.

The Madina Masjid & Islamic Centre, Oldham, announces the sighting of the Ramadan crescent moon in Saudi Arabia, and thus, the Taraweeh Prayers will begin today. The mosque has invited everyone to join the prayer starting at 8:30 p.m. today.

Beyond religious observance, interfaith events, iftar gatherings, and cultural exhibitions promote dialogue and understanding among people of different faiths and backgrounds, reinforcing the town's commitment to inclusivity.

Adam Khawaja, a spokesperson of the Madina Institute UK shared: “Join us for Taraweeh Prayers in Ramadan at the Madina Institute, Masjid and Community Hub, Oldham. Experience the atmosphere of the Quran and immerse yourself in the descent of mercy every night during Ramadan.”

Oldham Central Masjid has also organised the Taraweeh Jammat (nightly prayers) at 8:15 pm and also a late prayer at 12:15 pm.

Charity lies at the heart of Ramadan, and Oldham exemplifies this spirit through various initiatives. Local organizations and mosques provide iftar meals for the less fortunate and distribute food parcels to vulnerable families, embodying the essence of compassion and empathy.

Shahjalal Mosque and Islamic Centre, Oldham, shares in a statement: “Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is a precious time when we can draw closer to our Lord. By devoting yourself to worship, you can gain His mercy and forgiveness.

“Aside from fasting and prayer, you can perform many virtuous deeds during this month, which will increase Allah’s mercy towards you. Remembering the struggles of others and relieving their hardship will earn you extra reward and forgiveness.”

One of the five pillars of Islam is Zakat, which refers to the religious obligation that an individual earning reasonably has to donate a certain portion to charitable causes each year.

UKeff, a UK-registered charity, has been working since 2009 to alleviate poverty and help the vulnerable.

“We have been campaigning to keep Zakat local since 2011, when we began collecting and distributing it locally. All Zakat recipients’ eligibility is thoroughly verified before funds are allocated,” the charity shared.

“Some people choose to pay it throughout the course of the year, keeping a record so they know how much they may still owe. And although there is no compulsion to pay it during Ramadan, it’s often the month of choice for the majority,” they added.

While Ramadan brings joy, it also presents challenges, especially for those fasting amidst work or school commitments. However, the supportive atmosphere in Oldham, along with accommodations made by employers and educational institutions, helps alleviate the difficulties faced by fasting individuals.
