Oldham tennis courts to receive huge investment for refurbishments

Oldham Council and the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) have agreed on a partnership to prove a smash hit with players of all ages and abilities.

More than £229,000 is being invested in tennis courts across the borough, as six of the parks are to be refurbished as part of a major investment scheme.

The sites that will be refurbished are Alexandra Park (£105,365); Chadderton Hall Park (£49,210); Higher Crompton Park (£43,465); Dunwood Park (£19,290); Werneth Park (£6,200); and Lower Memorial Park (£5,790).

The improvements range from resurfacing work to new fencing, gating, and line marking.

Future developments could include an online booking system so courts can be booked in advance.

To make sure the courts are ready for the busy summer season, work on the sites is expected to start in the coming weeks – at a time when they are traditionally quiet.

So that the refurbishments can be carried out quickly, the courts will sometimes be closed to the public.

The courts in Alexandra Park, among the busiest in Oldham, will be the first to be upgraded.

Councillor Peter Dean, Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture, said: “This funding is a real boost for the town and our communities.

“I’d like to thank our officers for securing the money as it will breathe new life into the facilities, some of which are looking a bit tired.

“Our courts are already well used, but better and improved facilities will hopefully encourage even more people to visit our parks, have fun playing tennis and be more active.”
