Oldham youngsters pick up their GCSE results

More than 3,000 students from 13 Oldham high schools picked up their grades in the first set of GCSE exam results since before the pandemic.

Grades saw improvements across the board compared with the pre-pandemic results in 2019, with grade 5 and above increasing by 9.3 per cent and grade 7 up by 4.4 per cent.

Results have only dropped slightly since 2021 when students were awarded GCSEs based on teacher-assessed grades.

Oldham’s looked after children, including those in foster and care homes, had some fantastic results with many getting what they need to get to progress to Oldham Sixth Form and Oldham College.

Visiting Royton and Crompton Academy, Councillor Amanda Chadderton, Leader of Oldham Council, said: “I’m incredibly proud of the achievements of our young people who have been picking up their GCSE results today at schools across Oldham.

“I’ve been out speaking with some of them this morning and it’s great to see their excitement as they take their next steps onto sixth form and college, jobs and apprenticeships, or even joining the armed forces.

“Well done to all of you who have worked so hard, not just this past year, but throughout the pandemic. These past few years have been tough for everyone but for children and young people it has been especially hard.

“Learning at home with limited contact with friends has been a huge challenge. But today, as you pick up your results, I hope you’re proud of what you’ve overcome, and I wish you lots of luck as you take your next steps.”

Oldham Council has been working with Positive Steps to put together some useful information that links to a variety of different services in Oldham, just in case you or someone you know needs a helping hand in taking the next step.
