Oldham’s ex-Tory leader joins independent group

Graham Sheldon with Councillor Kamran Ghafoor

The former leader of Oldham’s Conservative councillors has joined a group of independents.

Coun Graham Sheldon left the Tories in early January.

He now joins the ranks of ‘The Oldham Group’, making it the joint largest opposition group alongside the Lib Dems. Both groups have nine members.

Coun Graham Sheldon said: “I am pleased to be joining The Oldham Group, who I believe are doing the best for the people of Oldham. Now, Saddleworth will be represented by the joint opposition, ensuring that our voice is heard.

“This is an important step in making sure our communities get the representation they deserve.”

Group leader Kamran Ghafoor said: “I have known Coun Sheldon for quite a number of years, and I am proud to welcome him into our group. He is a man of vision and integrity, and with his help, we look forward to expanding our group into all areas of Oldham.

“We want to open up The Oldham Group to the wider community so that we can encompass different perspectives on how best to make Oldham prosperous again.”

The Oldham Group  has gathered momentum since winning several seats off the Labour group during the last local election in May 2024.

The Conservatives have had through two leaders since January. Coun Dave Arnott left the group just weeks after becoming its boss, alongside fellow councillor Christine Adams.

Coun Max Woodvine is now leader of the five remaining Conservatives.

The change has once again shifted the political makeup of the council, which is led by a minority Labour administration.

There are 27 Labour members; nine Oldham group councillors; nine Lib Dems; five Conservatives and ten independent councillors belonging to smaller ward-specific groups.
