Talented group renovates old bus to make it usable

The newly renovated bus with the team.

An inspiring group of young adults have spruced up a derelict bus in the grounds of a local primary school.

The youngsters who have been taking part in the Oldham Kings Trust programme worked their magic on the old bus to turn it into an outdoor nature themed classroom for Greenacres Primary School.

As the school on Dunkerley Street, did not have time or the funding to renovate the disused bus themselves, the Kings Trust took it upon themselves to make it more usable.

This project aims to provide local children with a unique learning environment ensuring they can take part in their outdoor forest school activities, even during the bad weather.

The initiative highlights the power of young people coming together to create meaningful change and hope their work will inspire others to take on projects that give back to the community.

The team's goal was to provide an immersive experience by adding comfy seating areas and decorations inspired by nature.

Their efforts mean that the children can continue to engage in forest school activities and explore nature even during the unpredictable weather.

Sophie James, Oldham King’s Trust Team Manager, said: “I recruit local young people who are currently unemployed and out of education, with the goal to get them back into employment or further education.

“We wanted to give back to the community in a way that would make a long-term impact, seeing the bus transform from a neglected space to a vibrant learning environment has been very rewarding for us.

“A huge thank you goes out to the community and Sainsbury’s for their generous support. The funds raised during our fundraiser at Oldham Sainsburys played a crucial role in allowing us to buy the supplies to decorate the bus, ensuring every detail contributed to creating a warm, engaging and fun space.

"Another special thanks to Oldham Fire station, where red watch came to help us remove some of the chairs from inside of the bus – creating more space."

The Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service Kings Trust team programme supports young people in developing new skills, building confidence, and making a positive difference in their communities through teamwork, problem-solving and hands-on work.
