Three people slapped with fines for dumping rubbish

Three more people have been slapped with fines for dumping rubbish in Oldham.

They found themselves in the dock after Oldham Council took them to court for committing environmental crimes.

Last week, Sajid Mahmood, of Spring Street, pleaded guilty to a duty of care offence and was ordered to pay £378.

Carl Dempsey, of Chapel Street in Shaw, also pleaded guilty to a duty of care offence and was ordered to pay £172.

Lana Sanyang, of Mitchell Street, pleaded guilty to fly tipping three bags of waste and was ordered to pay £558 in total.

Councillor Amanda Chadderton, Deputy Leader of Oldham Council and Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said: “We will not tolerate the behaviour of residents who think it is acceptable to dump their waste on our streets and get away with it.

“We all have a right to live in a clean environment and we should all be able to take pride in where we live. Sadly, however, the ignorance of some individuals means this isn’t always the case.

“That is why our enforcement officers are out every week inspecting reports of dropped litter and fly-tipping so we can find those culpable and take action accordingly.

“We know how important this issue is to our residents and we will continue to tackle it as part of our £1.27m Don’t Trash Oldham campaign, which is already proving very popular.

“If you come across any similar issues in your area, please report this to us on our website and we will investigate.”

Since the launch of the council’s Don’t Trash Oldham campaign last September, more than 230 fines have been given out to people for environmental crimes.

This month, the council’s clean-up teams are in Coldhurst removing waste, litter and fly tipping from the ward’s roads, streets and alleyways.
