Watch the old TJ Hughes store in Oldham town centre disappear in 12 seconds

A brand-new timelapse video has been released, showing the scale of the ongoing work to revamp Spindles shopping centre in Oldham.

Work on the Spindles is well under way and, when complete, will include a new home for Tommyfield Market, new events space and new offices for small businesses and also for Oldham Council - freeing up the Civic Centre for redevelopment.

To showcase the progress made on the project, Oldham Council has released a timelapse of the demolition and updated photos of the site.

The visuals show how different the area of Spindles close to Parliament Square looks now, only four months into the revamp.

Councillor Arooj Shah, Leader of Oldham Council, said: "Seeing the progress made already on the revamp to Spindles is just incredible. Work on this huge regeneration programme got underway when I was previously Leader of the Council, so it's fantastic to return and see our new market, food hall and events space fast becoming a reality.

"These latest works come after new offices have already opened on the top floor of Spindles; more offices and our new Access Oldham customer service centre are currently being developed; and new lighter and brighter shops have opened on the ground floor for traders who have relocated from the upper level, including Costa, Rollers and Waterstones.

"This work on the Spindles is just part of our wider transformation of Oldham town centre; building a better Oldham where more people want to live, work and raise their families. That means creating more jobs, more homes, and more places for people to enjoy.

"We recently saw the opening of Hilton Square, a new cleaner and greener space for people to relax in the heart of our town centre, as well as plans going on show for the new Oldham Coliseum theatre, to be located in heritage buildings in Union Street close to the library and Gallery Oldham. There is so much going on to create a fantastic Oldham town centre for the future, and so much to be excited about."

The brand-new timelapse video shows the heavy machinery demolishing the former TJ Hughes building and significant ground works taking place, to make way for the new market and food hall which will open out on to Parliament Square.

Opposite the new market will also be the revamped Egyptian Room, with a street food-style food court, and the Cultural Quarter just around the corner, with the restored Old Library and new theatre.

Work on the Spindles is expected to be completed in early 2025.

Those wanting to keep up with the progress of the building can watch the live stream of the site on the council's website here.

The town centre regeneration scheme is anticipated to lock hundreds of millions of pounds in investment while delivering 2,000 new homes, 1,000 new jobs and 100 new apprenticeships.
