Former Ashton Sixth Form student Georgia Taylor-Brown MBE has been selected to represent Team England as part of the triathlon squad at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
She will be joined alongside team mates Alex Yee, Jonny Brownlee, and Sophie Coldwell.
Taking place at Sutton Park, triathlon will be the first medal event at the competition, which begins on Thursday 28 July and finishes on Monday 8 August. Speaking to Team England on her excitement of being given the opportunity to compete in front of a home crowd, Georgia Taylor-Brown, said:
“When I watched the London Olympics and how the crowd really got behind everyone, I thought it was quite sad that that may never happen again in my lifetime, so to be able to be at a home Games for the Commonwealth Games is quite incredible and something you’ll cherish and relish in as the crowds will really get behind you.
“Once we’d won our medals at the Olympics, I think it was Alex that said, ‘it’s cool that we’re now selected for the Commonwealth Games’, so that was a nice surprise, not only do we get an Olympic medal, but we’re also selected for Birmingham. I’m quite excited about it.”
The 27-year-old, who also attended Fairfield High School for Girls, Droylsden, scooped a silver medal in the women’s triathlon at the Tokyo Olympics, before going on to secure a gold medal whilst representing Great Britain in the triathlon mixed relay alongside Jess Learmonth, Brownlee and Yee. The achievement – the first time the mixed relay had been included in the Olympic Games - was made all the more special considering Georgia had to prove she was fit enough to compete a week before flying out to Japan after suffering a leg injury which left her on crutches.
What’s more, Georgia, who has also inspired pupils in schools across Tameside with regular speeches, defied the odds in the women’s triathlon after overcoming a puncture to her back tyre just a kilometre away from the from the end of the 40km bike ride. Georgia recovered from the setback and went on to storm past the group, earning a deserved place on the podium.
