Glossop North End appoint new manager

Glossop North End has announced Michael Worthington will take over as the club’s new first team manager.

After a thorough and intensive interview process, Michael has been selected as the man to lead GNE into the 23/24 season. James Stokes shall also be partnering up with Worthington and continuing his role of assistant manager at the club. On the appointment, the board of directors said, “Michael impressed us with his tactical know-how, player contacts, experience in bringing through younger players into first team environments, plus his all round club ethos and philosophy”.

Michael, who resides in Woodley, Stockport, is most recently known for his latest role at near neighbors Clitheroe, where Worthington became a first team coach under current manager David Dempsey, as well as holding the position of U23’s manager at the club. Since taking over the U23’s side at Clitheroe in 2020, Worthington led the team to 2 league titles in 3 years, with a win ratio of 71% over the course of his time with the team.

During his time at Clitheroe, Michael’s player development ethos was also clear to see, with 4 players signing first team contracts from the U23’s at Clitheroe, along with a total of 12 players making their senior debuts for the club from the U23’s during Worthington’s time at the club.

As part of his day to day life, Michael is a lecturer in sport as well as working for the FA as a coach developer/mentor, and regularly delivers UEFA B and UEFA C courses and supports candidates throughout their studies.

Upon his appointment at Glossop North End, Michael said, ‘’ Firstly, I’m absolutely delighted to be given this opportunity to manage Glossop North End. I believe football should be enjoyable, both on and off the pitch. I want everyone involved with the football club to enjoy their time with us. I aim to produce a team that entertains the fans, but also interacts and engages with them whilst being able to get results when it matters”.

“I am a very hands-on manager both on and off the pitch. Having witnessed myself the atmosphere and the buzz that the GNE fans can create on a matchday, I know that together, we can get the place rocking and bring Surrey Street back to being a place that is difficult to come to. After GNE’s disappointing relegation from the Northern Premier League, I believe the club needs a manager that can bring a positive energy and change the direction of the club”.
