NPL West: Glossop North End 2-0 Kendal Town
Glossop continued their impressive run of form with a 2-0 victory over Kendal Town at the Amdec Forklift Stadium.
First half goals from Jamie Rainford and Lee Wilshaw gave the Hillmen a deserved three points and extended their unbeaten streak to eight games in the NPL West.
Despite the bitterly cold elements, 299 attended the fixture and were treated to a great display from Stuart Mellish's side, who took the lead in the 32nd minute when Rainford struck past James McClenaghan to take his tally to five goals in ten games.
The Hillmen were in the ascendancy by this point and notched the all-important second on the stroke of half time. A set piece was finished by defender Wilshaw - a rarity for the 26-year-old.
Glossop, who were rarely threatened throughout the game, had numerous opportunities to add to their tally in the second half but the chances went begging.
Following the game, assistant manager Dave Mannix said he was delighted with the result and believes the recent run of form is a reflection of the players' efforts. Speaking to GNE Tv, he said: “I really enjoyed it today as the lads have worked hard over the last couple of months. Today, especially in certain periods of the game, everything came together and the professionalism the boys showed was different class. At the end it could have been three or four nil."
Mellish was equally as impressed with the result - particularly with the clean sheet. “I said to the lads at 2pm that I wanted them to show a bit of arrogance in how we play" he said. "I wanted us to show them how good we are. You do go eight games unbeaten for nothing. We’ve got a bit about us and I’m really pleased today. It was a thoroughly professional job and they never caused us any threat - it was just a case of us putting the ball in the back of the net which we did twice, which is good, but it could have been five or six and the clean sheet is massive.”
Glossop will be confident of extending their unbeaten streak at Mossley next Monday, as the Lilywhites are in dire straits, having lost their previous eight games in all competitions, conceding 24 goals in the process.
