Is Golf The Answer?

In the wake of coronavirus Dukinfield Golf Club has introduced extra measures to ensure the safety of its members, visitors and staff. Could golf be the answer for many who want to exercise whilst taking part in a sport that is both enjoyable and challenging?

The coronavirus pandemic has brought life as we know it to a halt as society tries to limit the spread and reduce any casualties. With many people working from home with offices shut as well as many normal day to day facilities such as shopping centres what.

With most elite sport in England cancelled for the foreseeable future with some even including grass root levels how can we be active whilst remaining safe? Contact sports and those that require close participation are off-limits for the majority including some gyms.

Could golf be the answer for many who want to exercise whilst taking part in a sport that is both enjoyable and challenging?

Golf is mainly in the open air which can be played as part of a group or just on your own. If groups do play there is no need to be too close to one another ensuring that they can still be socially isolated whilst still interacting which can benefit a person’s mental health.

At one local golf club, they have decided to enforce steps that ensure the safest possible environment for all. Dukinfield Golf Club sent an email of its new regulations to its members which will be in place until they are no longer required.

The club said:

“At our golf club, members are being encouraged to carry on playing golf with the Dukinfield golf club team striving to provide the game in the safest possible environment.

“As members continue to access the club please be mindful of staff, including the professional shop and bar to where possible make a concerted effort to reduce physical contact to a minimum.

“The golf course and practice facilities will remain open and members can bring guests with the Pro Shop OPEN to deal with bookings, golfing essentials & purchases.”

• Members are requested to keep a 2m distance whilst in the shop and use the hand sanitiser before any transaction.

•No shaking hands before and after play

•All flags are to be left in the hole whilst putting

•Wash hands after play

•One card per group and marker to only sign card and enter in the card in comp box after play

•Be aware of social distancing throughout your time at the golf club

The club also said,

“It is important to remember that doing exercise, staying fit and healthy boosts the immune system. Included in the current Government guidance is the need to exercise, walking has been highlighted as a specific activity of choice. Golf, in an adapted environment, can help to meet the exercise commitment.”
