Last Saturday, Stalybridge Celtic hosted a legends match which saw a group of ex-Manchester United stars take on a Stalybridge Celtic Legends side at Bower Fold.
The United squad boasted full internationals as well as UEFA Champions League, Premier League, and FA Cup winners- among those was 1999 treble winner Wes Brown and fellow defender Danny Simpson, who was part of the Leicester City side that won the Premier League against all odds in 2016.
The match also saw legends such as Karl Marginson and Tony Sullivan return to the Bower Fold turf, along with former boss Phil Wilson, who coached the side.
In front of a bumper crowd of 1,507, it was the United side who came out on top on the day, with an emphatic 11-4 victory which included a hat-trick from former Celtic forward Lee Trundle.
The club set up the match in partnership with local hospice, Willow Wood, which provides specialist palliative care for patients with life limiting illnesses, both cancer and non-cancer diagnosis.
On the day, fans were able to offer donations to the hospice and learn more about the fantastic work it does for the local community.
Stalybridge Celtic’s Commercial Director Steve Dewsnip said: “The team at Willow Wood Hospice do a fantastic job and have touched the lives of so many people throughout Tameside in a positive way over the last 25 years.
“By bringing exciting events such as the Legends game to Tameside, we are trying to do exactly the same, and so it made perfect sense to invite Willow Wood to be our charity partner for this game.”
To add to the funds raised on the day, the Stalybridge Celtic Supporters Association also made a generous £100 contribution to the final sum.
