Curzon Ashton have announced that defender Devon Matthews has departed the club to join League Two side Accrington Stanley for an undisclosed fee.

The 25-year-old joined the Nash at the start of the 2022/23 season and made 138 appearances for the club, scoring 8 goals.

The former Mossley, Glossop North End and Chadderton man has been an integral part of Curzon’s success over the past few seasons, inspiring the club to a 7th placed finish last campaign, which earned them a place in the National League North play-offs for the first time in their history.

Along with centre-back partner Marcus Poscha, Matthews has been a rock at the heart of the Curzon defence and has been vital to the club’s fairytale start to this season.

Speaking on his exit, the Oldham born centre-half said:

“Firstly, I want to say a massive thank you to everyone at the club for the past two and a half years.

“The board, the fans and management have all had a massive impact on me as a player.

“The lads I have played with during my time have helped me massively and made my time at the club special.

“Go on and win the league now!”

Following Matthews’ departure, Curzon boss Craig Mahon told the Reporter:

“Devon’s a top lad and a top person, and no manager wants to lose someone with his qualities.

“He’s a big reason as to why we’ve been at the right end of the table over the past few seasons.

“He’s going to be a big miss, but we’re just proud as a club to have played a part in his journey, and we wish him all the best.”
