More top tennis tips

Nigel Hunter, a tennis coach at Glossop Tennis Club, has more advice for you when it comes to playing the sport...

The smash is one of the hardest shots on a tennis court.

Check out a couple of tips to help you perfect this shot.

When an opponent is in trouble, their tried and tested defence is to lob the ball up high and give you a difficult ball to deal with.

The key to a smash is moving into the correct position.

What most players do is naturally look up because the ball is going over them.

This makes you move backwards in slow back steps.

You need to practice turning and taking your racket back early, moving sideways into a good position.

You need to be behind the ball so that you can deliver your smash with forward momentum.

A great tip we use to practice is to move back and learn to catch the ball with your non-hitting hand.

This should be up and pointing to the ball on a good smash so using it to catch is no problem.

The next error is people thinking that they have to smash the ball down.

This tends to lead to a dragged shot which ends up in the net.

Try aiming for the baseline. If you are behind the ball and making contact out in front the natural angle of your racket will send the ball down.

I hope you can put this tip into practice.
