Mossley advance to next stage of League Cup

Integro League Cup first round: City of Liverpool 0-1 Mossley

A clever Jes Uchegbulam goal was enough to see Mossley safely through to the next round of the Integro NPL Cup at the expense of hosts City of Liverpool at Bootle's Vesty Road ground on Tuesday night.

Gary Gee replaced the unavailable Craig Roddan in the only change to the Mossley side from the Workington victory.

The game was played at a frenetic pace with the home side making their debut in the Integro Cup and were keen to impress with a high octane style which I am sure many teams visiting Vesty Road this season will struggle to combat.

That Mossley were able to keep the home side at arms length for much of the tie is to Mossley’s credit particularly in central defence where skipper Andy Keogh and his young defensive partner Declan Evans were absolutely outstanding at the heart of the Mossley back four.

There were few clear chances for either side through the game but Mossley always appeared in control despite a number of fierce tackles coming in from the adrenalin fueled home side.

The game’s only goal came in the 71st minute as some neat Mossley play saw Jes Uchegbulam race past his marker on the left wing before poking an angled shot past the surprised City of Liverpool keeper who had no time to react

The home side tried their best to find a way back into the game but Mossley were in control. The best City of Liverpool could manage was a well struck free kick by Paul Williams that Josh Ollerenshaw was able to turn over the bar.
