Nash suffer promotion setback

Curzon Ashton suffered a setback in their quest to finish in a National League North play-off position on Tuesday after a 3-0 defeat at home to Spennymoor Town.

Hosts Curzon started the game brightly and were unfortunate not to go into the break leading, with Jimmy Spencer’s glancing header flying just wide early on before Isaac Sinclair’s half volley was tipped around the post by Rohan Luthra.

The Nash then came even closer just before the half-hour mark when Marcus Poscha’s acrobatic effort bounced off the top of the crossbar.

Craig Mahon’s side were made to pay for their missed opportunities on the hour when Rob Ramshaw’s drilled cross picked out an unmarked Junior Mondal whose first time finish found the bottom corner.

Moments later Curzon skipper Jimmy Spencer had a golden opportunity to level things up, but the number nine could only direct his half volley wide of the target from just inside the area.

Visitors Spennymoor then doubled their lead eight minutes from time, with Ramshaw involved once again, his cutback finding veteran striker Glen Taylor who was on hand to poke home his 24th goal of the season.

Things then went from bad to worse for The Nash when Taylor turned provider, glancing a header towards Will Harris who found space in behind and lifted the ball over the onrushing Bobby Jones to seal the win.

“It’s disappointing, obviously,” Curzon boss Craig Mahon told The Reporter following the defeat.

“We’ve put ourselves in a great position over the past few weeks, going three games unbeaten, so to lose like that, it’s tough.

“But we can’t feel sorry for ourselves, we’ve just got to dust ourselves off and go again.

“If you’d have told me at the start of the season we’d be in this position with four games to go I’d be over the moon, so we’ve just got to keep going now and see where it takes us.”

The loss sees Mahon’s side slip down to sixth in the table, who now trail Chorley on goal difference.

This weekend brings the tough trip to high flying Kidderminster Harriers.
