On International Women’s Day, 75 primary school children from Tameside made the trip down to Great Academy Ashton as part of the #LetGirlsPlay initiative.

The nationwide initiative was set up by the FA back in 2021 following the success of the Lionesses, and it aims to give all girls equal access to football, by providing them with the opportunities to participate in the sport.

Great Academy Ashton was one of the many schools across the borough to take part in the initiative, hosting a 3v3 football festival for local year five and six students.

A total of 11 schools across Tameside sent their children down to the festival, which was a huge success.

As well as playing football throughout the morning, the children had the opportunity to meet and take pictures with Manchester United’s mascot Fred The Red.

In addition, there was a surprise appearance from football freestyler and Guinness World Record holder Ash Randall, who showed the girls some of his best moves, before letting them have a go at replicating them.
