Staly Vegas are celebrating after winning the Stalybridge Snooker League, whilst St Peters took the honours in the Whist League.
Here, league secretary Ian Hopton takes us through the final few weeks which produced an exciting climax.
Week 16 saw the rearranged match between St Peters and Denton CC on the Wednesday night and the normal match between Denton and St Peters on the Thursday.
The other Thursday matches included Staly Vegas and Mossley B, and Staly Labour against Hyde Club. In the snooker there was a 4-1 win for St Peters, and 3-2 wins for Denton, Staly Labour and and Staly Vegas. These results mean that St Peters, Denton and Staly Vegas are all tied on 44 points with four games to play.
In the Whist League, sponsored by Zeros bar of Stalybridge, there were wins for St Peters, Mossley B and Hyde Club, while St Peters and Denton also played out a draw.
The placings are now Mossley B in first spot with 24 points, and Denton and St Peters tied in second place on 21 points.
Week 17 saw Hyde Club entertain St Peters, Mossley B play Denton, and Staly Labour play Staly Vegas. In the Snooker League there was a 5-0 win for St Peters, a 4-1 win for Mossley B and Staly Vegas won 3-2. These results mean that St Peters are now top with 49 points and Staly Vegas are second on 46 points. In the whist league, sponsored by Zeros of Stalybridge, there were wins for Mossley B, St Peters and Staly Labour. Mossley B are now on 26 points with St Peters on 23 points.
Week 18 saw Staly Vegas play St Peters, Hyde Club play Denton and Mossley B play Staly Labour. Denton beat Hyde Club 4-1, while there were 3-2 wins for St Peters and Mossley B. St Peters now top the league with 52 points while Denton, Staly Vegas and Mossley B are joint second on 49 points. What an exciting 2\two weeks we have left with four teams in with a chance of winning the league.
The Whist League was just as close. There were wins for Staly Vegas , Staly Labour and Denton. Mossley B and St Peters are still first and second, despite losing and Denton have moved to joint second.
Week 19 saw St Peters play Staly Labour, Denton play Staly Vegas and Mossley B play Hyde Club. Mossley B beat Hyde 4-1 and there were 3-2 wins for Staly Labour and Staly Vegas. The current standings in the Snooker League, with one week to go, are St Peters on 54 points, Mossley B on 53 points, and Staly Vegas on 52 points. There were card wins for St Peters, Staly Vegas and Hyde Club, and this means that Mossley are on 26 points, with St Peters one point behind.
The final week saw St Peters play Mossley B, Hyde Club play Staly Vegas and Denton play Staly Labour. Staly Vegas beat Hyde 5-0, Denton won 4-1 and Mossley B won 3-2. These results mean that Staly Vegas are champions on 57 points and Mossley B and St Peters finished on 56 points. Mossley B are second based on countback between the teams. In the Whist League, sponsored by Zeros of Stalybridge, there were wins for St Peters, Hyde Club and Denton, which means that St Peters are Whist Champions with 27 points and Mossley B are second on 26 points.
Congratulations to all trophy winners. It has been a close league and it is very good to be back again and it has been welcomed by all the clubs involved. The league is competitive, whilst giving the players the opportunity to socialise every Thursday. The league is always looking for new players to join.
