Tribute to Peter Wragg: A True Football Legend
On behalf of the Tameside Reporter, Tameside Radio and myself, I wish to pay tribute to Peter Wragg, one of football’s truly great characters. Peter’s passion for the football and his remarkable career have left a big impression on all who knew him.
Peter was not only a brilliant football man but also a friend to legends, including Sir Alex Ferguson. His years with Arena Management and Carling saw him pitch side for many of the Premier League’s most big moments, from title presentations and Carling Cup finals. His passion for, and dedication to football were unmatched and he was loved by those at all levels and allegiances within the sport.
Peter had a long and successful career in football management, working with clubs such as Leek Town, Stalybridge Celtic, Chorley, Hyde United, and Macclesfield Town.
At Stalybridge Celtic, Peter achieved great success during two separate tenures. First as manager, starting in 1977, he lead the club to its first ever Cheshire County League Championship in the 1979/80 season, along with securing the Challenge Shield. Under his leadership, Stalybridge Celtic also finished as runners up in the Cheshire Senior Cup. Peter returned to the club in 2007 during a difficult period, stepping in to offer his expertise and help guide the team through challenging times.
Peter’s time as Hyde United Manager is also memorable, particularly the FA Cup run in 1983/84 and the NPL Cup Final at Maine Road. His leadership and drive also delivered a 4th place finish in the league during the 1984/85 season, cementing his legacy with the Tigers.
After his time at Hyde, Peter’s managerial excellence continued at Macclesfield Town, where he achieved a historic treble in 1986/87. It is a poignant irony that Macclesfield secured the NPL title that season at Hyde United’s ground.
Peter Wragg was universally adored. His warmth, humour, and unwavering love for football made him a popular figure not only in Tameside but across the footballing world.
As Hyde United prepares to face Macclesfield on New Year’s Day, it is fitting that the teams will honour Peter’s memory with a minute’s applause before kick off.
On behalf of everyone at the Tameside Reporter, Tameside Radio and the local footballing community, we extend our deepest sympathies to Peter’s family and friends.
Rest in peace my friend, you were a football man for all seasons - Chris Bird (former Director Manchester City Football Club)
