Ashton United were one of three Tameside clubs to make it through to the third qualifying round of the FA Cup over the weekend, they made it through on Tuesday (19 September) after a 3-1 win away to Atherton Collieries.
The match was a replay of the tie that took place at Hurst Cross on Saturday (16 September), which ended in a 2-2 draw.
The Robins started the replay poorly, going behind after just ten minutes thanks to a close-range strike from Dylan Moonan, but responded perfectly, finding an equaliser moments later when Jason Gilchrist headed in a cross from Sean Newton.
Steve Cunningham’s men then took the lead moments before half time when Gilchrist grabbed his second of the evening, heading into an open goal after goalkeeper Buckley’s poor clearance landed straight into his path.
Kielen Adams put the game beyond any doubt two minutes from time when he slotted the ball past the Atherton goalkeeper to seal his side's place in the next round, where they travel to Lancaster City.
As for Hyde United, they progressed thanks to a 2-1 win at home to Albion Sports.
The Tigers went ahead just after the hour mark after Redshaw’s cross found Fearnley who headed the ball home.
They doubled their lead just minutes later when Redshaw got a goal of his own to put Hyde in control. A late goal from the visitors made for a nervy end but Nick Spooner’s men managed to hold on and secure their place in the next round, where they will host either Spennymoor Town or Marine.
The final Tameside club to make it through in the FA Cup was Curzon Ashton, who defeated Warrington Town 3-2 on Saturday (16 September).
The Nash took the lead after just four minutes through Isaac Sinclair’s long-range strike, before Warrington found an equaliser on the half-hour mark. Hosts Warrington took the lead moments later before Curzon found an equaliser of their own when Will Hayhurst converted from the spot.
With the score level at 2-2 for the majority of the second half, Adam Lakeland’s men found a winner 15 minutes from time when Stefan Mols came back to haunt his former side and ensure Curzon would progress to the next round, where they will host either Runcorn Linnets or Chorley.
Unfortunately, there was one Tameside club that bowed out of the competition in the second qualifying round, and this was Mossley, who were defeated 3-1 by Emley in Tuesday’s replay.
The Lilywhites were extremely unlucky not to progress in the original tie, which took place on Saturday at Seel Park. Mossley were leading with just seconds to go, before visitors Emley found an equaliser, thus forcing a replay.
This replay was goalless right up until the 89th minute when Emley took the lead, and looked to have won it, but a stoppage-time equaliser from Oumar Camara took the game to extra time.
This is where the game slipped away from David Fish’s men, who conceded twice in extra time and slumped to a 3-1 defeat.
A tough one to take for Mossley, who will feel this was very much a missed opportunity.
