Tintwistle setting the standard for football in the High Peak

Tintwistle Athletic have been making waves across the High Peak in recent weeks, winning the Derbyshire Divisional Cup North at both first team and reserve levels.

The club’s first team retained the trophy back in March after a tie against Cromford & Wirksworth Town which finished 1-1 in normal time was decided by penalties.

Last year’s match-winner Tom Beswick opened the scoring from the spot before a goal from opponents Cromford & Wirksworth drew them level.

After the sides could not be separated in normal time the match went all the way to penalties, with Tinny keeping their nerve to win it through a sudden-death spot kick.

A proud moment for captain Ant Rodrigues, who scored the winning penalty for his side after being with the club since he was just seven years old.

The club's reserve team then faced local rivals Glossop North End Community Club in the Junior Cup North final, at the same venue where the first team were victorious the week before, the Asgard Engineering Stadium.

The match was a huge occasion for the local community and this was reflected in the turnout, with just under 600 fans making the trip to support their sides.

The match was a tight affair, with both teams desperate not to lose what was a massive game.

After a goalless first half, the match was sprung into life when Thi Reece Lenihan fired his shot into the far corner to give Tintwistle the lead early in the second.

Their advantage was then doubled with ten minutes to play when Brandon Wood slotted the ball home and sealed the win for his side.

A huge win for Tintwistle Reserves who managed to avenge the heartbreak of last year’s final a year on.

Commiserations to Glossop North End Community Club who did superbly well to make the final, having only been running for one season.
