United View: Penalty heroics see Reds topple Arsenal

Manchester United vs. Arsenal was once top-billing in English football. While neither side holds the dominance they once enjoyed in the late 90s and early 00s, Sunday’s clash was a thrilling reminder of the fierce rivalry between these two giants.

An uneventful first half saw United shut out Mikel Arteta’s Gunners, but the game sparked into life when Bruno Fernandes fired the Reds into the lead in the 52nd minute with a tremendous finish.

The dynamic shifted dramatically when Diogo Dalot received a red card in the 61st minute, leaving United with ten men. Arsenal capitalised almost immediately, with Gabriel heading in the equaliser just two minutes later. Altay Bayindir could have done better from the cross that led to the goal—a disappointing moment for the Turkish goalkeeper, who has faced criticism after his performance in the League Cup loss to Spurs just weeks ago.

Referee Andy Madley would controversially point to the spot after Harry Maguire fouled Kai Havertz. However, the Turkish goalkeeper would then become United’s hero, diving low to his left to keep out Martin Odegaard’s penalty. He would then go on to produce several more key saves to prevent Arsenal from taking the lead.

Penalties then came, and United held their nerve, with Bayindir once again successfully guessing correctly to deny Kai Havertz, before Joshua Zirkzee netted the decisive spot kick to send Amorim’s side into the Fourth Round.

United undoubtedly rode their luck, but this was another resilient performance, similar to their display against Liverpool, putting in the hard yards to deny Arsenal the space to attack. Another big positive was how they dealt with Arsenal’s set pieces, which had undone the Reds in their 2-0 defeat to the Gunners in the league.

Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt epitomised this, putting their bodies on the line on multiple occasions. The former even got a standing ovation from United’s travelling fans. His performance was even more impressive, considering he had spent the previous two days at home with illness.

It’s now two positive performances in succession for the Reds against two of the league’s top teams. The desire is there, and results like this will only help Amorim receive buy-in from his squad.

That win in the FA Cup has set up a home tie to Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Leicester City, seeing the Dutchman make another return to Old Trafford this season. And with United out of the Carabao Cup and the title race, a win in the FA Cup could be a viable option for United to earn more silverware and a route into Europe.

Focus now turns to the January transfer window, and it is looking to be another busy month for United, with Marcus Rashford’s future hanging in the balance amid interest from multiple clubs, including AC Milan and Barcelona. Milan is deciding whether to move for Rashford or Manchester City’s Kyle Walker, with the Italian side limited on the number of UK spots in their team. And while Barcelona has a questionable financial situation, a move for Rashford could spark a move in the opposite direction to Old Trafford.

The Reds are eager to get players in but are keen to avoid a loan move for a payer they aren’t interested in signing permanently, moving away from the previous strategy of bringing in ageing players on big money.

One name being suggested is Malian winger Nene Dorgeles from RB Salzburg, as suggested by Christopher Vivell, who is aiding the club in recruitment. The 22-year-old aligns with the club’s stance of signing upcoming talent but also has experience playing in the Champions League.

The Reds now have back-to-back fixtures at Old Trafford, with Southampton on Thursday and Brighton on Sunday.
