Wilson double gives Ashton the points

BetVictor Premier Division: Ashton United 2-0 Scarborough Athletic

Ashton’s second meeting with Scarborough in just over a month saw them get their revenge courtesy of a goal in each half from Josh Wilson. The Robins’ leading scorer was restored to the starting line up and following a steady start provided a superb volleyed finish after 10 minutes following a poor headed clearance of Sam Sheridan’s deep cross.

Louis Almond then saw a fierce effort from Wilson’s flick saved at the second attempt by Thomas Taylor and just past the half hour Thomas Allan’s good run into the area for the Seadogs saw his effort just blocked by Luca Havern. Tserpes’ driven cross was then cut out by Coates at the near post before the full back was carded for pulling back Thomson on the burst. Wilson then sliced well off target following Pricthard’s run into the area as the interval arrived.

On the restart Tserpes’ decent delivery was headed over at the back post by Sheridan and Thomson cut inside but shot wide of the far post before full back Brooksby did likewise. With 20 minutes left the ball just evaded Allan following Ryan Watson’s free kick with Harry Coates heading the return ball over the top. Allan then helped Watson’s corner just past the far post but with 8 minutes left a long free kick saw sub Dom McHale, returning to Ashton’s ranks, sidestep Coates who conceded the penalty allowing Wilson to convert for the 8th time this season.

Connor Thomson was then released by Michael Coulson’s pass with Greg Hartley making the save with his foot and he then denied Ryan Blott in the follow-up. McHale could have made things completely secure as he cut inside from Michael Brewster’s cross and brought a fine save out of Taylor and after Tserpes had cleared Thomson’s cross from in front of goal Hartley had the final say tipping over Blott’s deflected effort.
