AI camera trial to search for distracted drivers

A new camera system that claims it can automatically detect drivers using mobile phones is being trialled in Greater Manchester.

The technology uses AI to scan for potential offences, including whether drivers are wearing their seat belts.

Humans assess any images that may contain evidence of lawbreaking, while the system deletes all pictures that don’t contain an offence.

"This trial will be used by Safer Roads Greater Manchester as a traffic survey so we can understand how many drivers still choose to break the law,” said a statement from Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM).

“This will be used to refine future road safety campaigns aiming to improve compliance of mobile phone and seat belt use by drivers.”

Safer Roads Greater Manchester launched the ‘Touch.Screen’ campaign earlier this year, which aims to raise awareness of the dangers of driving while distracted.

This follows the death of Frankie Hough from Chadderton and her unborn daughter Neeve in May 2023, when a driver crashed into her car on the hard shoulder of the M66 in Bury while filming himself speeding.

Driver distraction has been cited as a factor in the death or serious injury of 138 people in Greater Manchester over the past decade, including 23 who died while drivers were using a mobile.

“The road requires your full attention whatever your mode of transport,” said Superintendent Gareth Parkin of GMP’s Special Operations unit. “Distractions such as mobile phones and other handheld devices can cause you to lose your focus on the road and potentially miss an upcoming hazard.

“Using a mobile phone could result in a fine, ban, or worse still, put somebody’s life at risk.

“We know that wearing a seat belt is not just a life-saving habit, it is a legal requirement; that should be prioritised by every individual for their own well-being and the well-being of others on the road.

“We have seen some devastating incidents over the years which has significant impact on families, please don’t be the reason that prevents yourself or someone else from going home to their loved ones.”
