The iconic and internationally renowned Whit Friday Band Contest has been part of the fabric of Mossley for over 130 years.
But Mossley AFC, which hosts the town's contest, is now appealing for the local community's help to ensure it can continue.
The contest is held in such regard that more than 100 brass bands travel from all over the world to perform across Tameside.
This year's contest is due to be held on Friday 2 June.
A spokesperson for Mossley AFC said: "Often described as 'the greatest free show on earth', in recent years we’ve hosted the Mossley contest at Seel Park. If we hadn’t, like many others, it would have disappeared.
"The contest is organised by volunteers but we can’t run it without help from the people of Mossley and the surrounding areas."
Hosting the contest - including running costs and prize money - is at least £8,000.
The club has set up a GoFundMe page, which has already raised several hundred pounds.
