Tameside Council have awarded a £600,000 contract to an architect firm for 'detailed design work’ on the redevelopment of the Stalybridge West scheme.

Todd Architects, who have offices in Manchester, London, Belfast and Dublin, won the tender that council bosses hope will revitalise part of the town centre.

The money for the project is taken from a £20m grant given to TMBC from the previous government's Levelling-Up Fund, of which £11.2m is specifically for the Stalybridge West development.

All cash for the venture must be spent by the end of March 2026.

“This scheme is being delivered from a defined level of grant funding and it is therefore essential that costs are managed appropriately to ensure the scheme remains within budget,” said a report from TMBC’s Director of Place, Julian Jackson.

“The project team will need to closely monitor costs as the project progresses, revising the project specification where required, in order to mitigate any potential cost.”

Stalybridge was one of 16 areas to benefit from the Capital Regeneration Projects, with the council aiming for Stalybridge West to become a residential part of the town centre that includes modern apartments and family homes.

One piece of new infrastructure will be a pedestrian bridge over the River Tame to further link the railway station to the town centre, while another will be a multi-storey car park replacing an existing surface-level equivalent.

Todd Architects call the scheme an ‘comprehensive urban regeneration strategy’, with their Manchester Studio Lead, Seamus Lennon, saying: “This is a vitally important project that will provide much needed homes for the borough.

“We are delighted to be part of the team building a new community within the town centre and bringing well located brownfield land back to life."
