Police are urging Tameside and High Peak residents to register their push bikes for free on the National Cycle Database.
Cyclists can bring their bikes along to Bankswood Skate Park in Hadfield between 3-5pm on Thursday, August 1, or outside Hyde Police Station from 10-11am on Wednesday, August 7.
Two tamper-proof ID stickers will be added to the frame of each bike, which as well as making lost or stolen cycles easier to recover, the database's website claims it will also “reduce your risk of theft by warning thieves that you use BikeRegister”.
Those attending will need to provide a name, address and a valid email to access the service, while officers ask that frames are clean and dry “as this will help with the application of the tamper-proof stickers”.
Tracing its roots back to 1992, the National Cycle Database contains the details of more than one million bikes and is used by all the UK’s police forces.
