A Salvation Army officer is raising money to fund a new cooking on a budget programme for the local community as another way to tackle the cost of living crisis.
Captain Jane Bishton, church leader of The Salvation Army in Openshaw, located in Lime Square, took on the Great Manchester 10K run to raise funds to help bring a new programme to the corps (church) in a bid to ease the continued cost of living crisis gripping the nation.
Now The Salvation Army’s Victory Programme is available at its Openshaw corps for the whole community.
The initiative is a six-week course inspired by the community spirit and resourcefulness created during the Second World War’s ‘Dig for Victory’ campaign that encouraged people to turn spare land into allotments to supplement food rations with home-grown vegetables.
Now participants will learn how to cook meals on a budget whilst making new friends and gaining confidence.
The Salvation Army in Openshaw works with local people in the community to support those in need and also runs an emergency food bank for people in crisis which works on a referral basis.
