Denton and Reddish Andrew Gwynne MP celebrates Lancashire Day with school pupils

Andrew Gwynne, MP for Denton and Reddish, was joined by Audenshaw councillors Charlotte Martin, Nick Axford, and Teresa Smith, Tameside’s civic mayor Tafheen Sharif, and Year Six pupils from Aldwyn Primary School to celebrate Lancashire Day at Ryecroft Hall.

Lancashire Day marks the day in 1295, when King Edward I permitted the first ever parliamentary representation from the county.

Although the administrative areas have swapped and changed over the years, the historic County Palatine and Duchy of Lancaster remains a geographical and political reality, with the boundary cutting through modern Greater Manchester at the Rivers Mersey and Tame.

Mr Gwynne said: “It was a pleasure to see our local community come together to celebrate the historic importance of Lancashire Day. 

“I want to say a big thank you to our Team Audenshaw councillors for helping put the event together, our civic mayor for reading the proclamation, and the pupils from Aldwyn Primary who were a credit to their school.  

“I look forward to the continuation of this annual tradition, ensuring Lancashire is not forgotten.”
