Unemployment for over 50s in Tameside has fallen by five per cent Job Centre bosses have revealed.
However, 6,795 people are out of work in the borough, an increase of 240 on last week's figures. Of these, 1,270 are under 24-years-old, a rise of 135 or 11 per cent.
Jenny Stanton, Department of Work and Pensions Tameside partnership manager said: "Although we have seen a slight increase overall and for 18-12-year-olds, the hard work and sessions run by our Tameside Work Coaches with our older customers has resulted in a five per cent decline in unemployment based on this time last year, which is really positive.
"Our youth work coaches are working closely with our employer advisers to secure apprenticeship opportunities, on the National Apprenticeship website there are currently 254 opportunities within 10 miles of Ashton-Under-Lyne and 59 opportunities within five miles of Ashton-under-Lyne. engagement remains positive and working well in our Denton Youth Hub."
The Job Centre says there will be vacancies at the new Starbucks due to open in Hyde in the spring.
In addition, Exemplar Care is opening a new care home, Acer Mews, in Ashton early in the new year.
