Droylsden journey to Widnes in first away fixture

Droylsden are scheduled to compete in their first away fixture of the season at Widnes tonight.

Dave Pace's side enter the game having battled back from 3-1 behind to earn a 3-3 draw against Colne on Saturday, thanks to a Liam Caddick double and a Rhys Clooney.

Meanwhile, Widnes will be hoping to bounce back from the disappointment of throwing away a two-goal lead at Ramsbottom United. The Whites went two goals ahead but were pegged back in the second-half, before eventually losing the game after conceding a 90th minute goal. 

The two sides enjoyed similar fortunes last season in what was previously known as the Evo-Stik West. Widnes ended the season in 12th position, having won 15, drawn six, and lost 17, while the Bloods finished two places below them, having won 12, drawn seven and lost 19.

This season presents an opportunity for both sides to learn from their mistakes and push for the playoffs. Droylsden supporters have been deprived of success for a good number of years, and this season marks the sixth consecutive season at step eight for Pace's side. Just over a decade ago, Droylsden were competing in the top tier of non-league football against the likes of Cambridge United, Oxford United and Torquay United. A disastrous few years saw the club tumble down the leagues, and they have since failed to recover and rise up the pyramid.

However, supporters will be encouraged by a string of new signings over summer. Notable faces include former Chester and Salford City defender, Steven Howson, as well as experienced striker Aaron Burns, who has previously played for Altrincham, FC United and Trafford amongst others.

Shaquille Antoine-Clarke has also agreed to stay at the club, along with goalkeeper Chris Thompson, who joined the club from Clitheroe at the start of last season.

With over 12 weeks of rest from league competition, and with a new-look squad at his disposal, Pace will be relishing the chance of putting Droylsden on the map come the end of the season.
