Dukinfield school celebrates golden anniversary

Former pupils and staff of Broadbent Fold Primary School were invited back to attend its 50th anniversary celebrations.

The Dukinfield school held a special assembly where today’s students had the opportunity to question former students about their experience at the school, their favourite memories and how the school itself has changed since they attended.

The assembly was followed by the burial of a time capsule created by some of the children. A cherry tree was also planted.

Headteacher Catherine Parker said the school wanted to ‘celebrate a significant milestone’.

She added: “They [the students] are a very creative bunch, always coming in eager and excited to learn.

"Our modern foreign language is Polish so we teach that throughout the school. We know we’ve got a great Polish community in Greater Manchester so we wanted to do a language that would suit the community around us and get the children ready for their future.”

Catherine said that the school try to sing as much as they can in Polish so the assembly ended with a chorus of ‘Happy Birthday’ from the children in their modern foreign language.

Deborah Mason, former headteacher at the school, said: “The school certainly hasn’t changed in spirit since I was here, it has the same community feel and warmth.

“It’s been wonderful coming back, there was beautiful singing in the hall and the children have really taken an interest in the history of the school, understanding what they’re a part of.

“As a headteacher, you understand that this isn’t your school, this is the community’s school and you just hope that you can do the very best with it while you’re the custodian.

“So it’s been lovely to come back and see that it’s in such safe hands with Mrs Parker.”
