A new exhibition celebrating 50 years of Tameside will open at Portland Basin Museum on Saturday November 23.
Formed in 1974, the entire borough will be the focus of ‘The Nine Towns of Tameside’ display on the museum’s ground floor.
The collection will feature landmarks from every nook and cranny of the area, as well as looking back at some of the fashions, music and technology of five decades ago.
Dukinfield and Stalybridge councillor Leanne Feeley said: “I’m most impressed by the way such a breadth of objects from the museum’s collections, and images stored in our archives, have been used to create such a fascinating and absorbing exhibition.
“While it will clearly appeal to all those who have an interest in local history, I know it will also be enjoyed by anyone who wants to learn more about Tameside, its towns and villages, and indeed the pre-internet days of mid-1970s when music and fashion were so different.”
One of the exhibits will be a jacket worn at the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics by Ashton diver Anthony Harding, who won a bronze medal in the synchronised 3m springboard event at the games.
The Nine Towns of Tameside runs from Saturday until July 2025 at Portland Basin Museum in Ashton, and admission is free.
