Police have confirmed that a fire which broke out at a derelict nightclub in Ashton is being treated as arson.

It happened at the former Hudson Bay nightclub on Stamford Street Central in the town on Thursday evening (29 September).

Black smoke was seen billowing from the building as Stamford Street Central and Booth Street were closed for a period whilst the blaze was brought under control.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said four fire engines from Ashton, Stalybridge, Hollins and Mossley fire stations, along with a hydraulic platform from Oldham, a Command Support Unit from Atherton, and further support from Hyde, quickly attended after receiving the call just after 6.15pm.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used three hose reels to extinguish the fire and crews were in attendance for around two hours.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police confirmed on Friday that the fire was being investigated as arson but gave no further update.
