Five Tameside groups have cause for celebration

Almost £7,000 was awarded when the Tameside Community and Innovation Fund held its second grants meeting.

The event, which covered the borough’s east neighbourhood – Dukinfield, Mossley and Stalybridge – was held at Stalybridge Baptist Church, Ambleside, and attended by the new Civic Mayor of Tameside, Cllr Tafheen Sharif.

Five groups were successful: Andrew Street Pond Association, Mossley – Andrew Street Pond Project, £2,000; Springs Botanical Gardens, Stalybridge – Healthy Growers, £1,035; Dukinfield Moravian Church – Hamper Scheme, £1,000; Heyrod Community Association, Spruce up the Swings, £922; 2nd Dukinfield Scouts – Rejuvenation of the Dell and Old Chapel Grounds, £2,000.

Cllr Vimal Choksi, Tameside Council’s executive member for towns and communities, said: “I was delighted to attend another very successful evening.

“Once again I was highly impressed by the commitment and passion shown by the various groups who clearly have great belief in their projects and the good they are doing in the community.

“I’m look forward to the grant events for our south and west neighbourhoods which are coming up over the next few weeks.”

To qualify for grants, community groups and charities needed to demonstrate a project based around one or more of four themes: Keeping people safe, preventing and reducing youth anti-social behaviour, strengthening communities through green spaces, supporting poverty and vulnerability.

The remaining meetings are for the south neighbourhood (Hattersley, Hyde and Longdendale) and west (Audenshaw, Denton and Droylsden).
